Words to Live By

"It's risky," said Experience.
"It's pointless," Reason chimed in.
"Give it a try," the Heart whispered.

Visions of Visionaries: Talib Kweli

MADE — a venue and artistic collective in the heart of Berlin — can be a gallery, a workspace, a studio, a stage or a laboratory. Most of all, it is an extraordinary venue that invites you to be inspired. Their interview with Talib Kweli (one of my favourite Brooklyn-based MCs) focuses on his thoughts about creativity, ambition and passion. It just hits the spot....

SMARTER Goals

A few week's ago I was looking for a video that explained SMART goals without all that MBA jibba-jabba, which can leave many folks scratching their heads saying, "Huh?" Funny that I found one at the end of, what I consider to be, the best goal-setting post ever (by Tim Brownson), which I tweeted about a year ago. I'd strongly recommend reading it to complement this vid. Speaking of which, if the term "ecology" doesn't ring true for you, then think of the "E" in SMARTER as relating to your "environment" instead.

Free Your Mind

I had an interesting breakthrough last month regarding a creative project that I've stopped and started on over and over again. It's been going on for a few years and acknowledging the ridiculousness of it all made me come to realize that it would make for a valuable topic to write upon.

It's all about the Buddhist concept of attachment and how it can create unnecessary roadblocks in your creative and business life. Now, I'm not going to spend time giving you a detailed definition of attachment, because it would read like one hot mess.

The jist? It's the energy we invest into a core belief about ourselves, a person or a situation, which is usually based on past experience, memory, childhood conditioning, outside pressures, or our mindset. Basically...it's about not being fully present.

Not sure what this all has to do with artists, healers and business? Well let me briefly bring things back to that creative project of mine, which I've been wearing around my neck for years like albatross bling.

Arts & Upstarts: Tanya Pillay, HypnoSage

Theatre Performer & Creator

COMPANY:
HypnoSage
Motivational hypnosis for personal change.
Started: 2007

What type of business do you run and why did you decide to start it?

I became a Motivational Hypnotist to help people change, enhance, or achieve in any aspect of their lives. I say "motivational" to distinguish my work from stage hypnosis, which is usually only for the purpose of entertainment. I guide clients to relax using various suggestions, personalized imagery, and meditation techniques. Together we explore the obstacles holding them back and co-create acceptible solutions so that they can move forward. I started the practice after I tried hypnosis as a client; other attempts to address chronic stress and tension produced minimal results. After a few sessions, my life changed in ways I  believed to be possible but could not seem to achieve in any other way. I felt empowered with a vision of my ideal self. I also walked away with a more supportive inner dialogue.
